By the time the rebel Absalom entered Jerusalem, David was well on his way to the Jordan. If he could just get there, he could rest awhile and then escape to the eastern side of the river. Meanwhile, Ahithophel and all the leading men of Israel put Absalom on the throne of David and proclaimed him king. Then they offered Absalom counsel about his next move against David.
