King Solomon reigned in Jerusalem for 40 years, and when he died his son Rehoboam came to power. All the elders of Israel came to Shechem to crown him king, but they also sent for Jeroboam. He had been an officer over the men who worked on King Solomon’s work projects. But he had rebelled and had fled to Egypt as an enemy of the king and stayed there until the death of Solomon.
