King Saul hated David for two main reasons: 1) David was more popular with the people. That hurt Saul’s pride. After all, he was the King! 2) God had anointed David to be the next king of Israel. In those days if you were king your son took your place when you could no longer run the country. King Saul couldn’t stand the thought that David would replace his son, Jonathan, and bring an end to the royal family.
