The year was 1844, and many people believed that Jesus would come again that year. William Miller had been preaching that Jesus would come sometime in the spring or fall of 1844. The date of October 22 was finally set, since that was the Jewish Day of Atonement from Old Testament times. As the day approached, people gathered together daily to pray and to encourage one another.
