The gospel was gaining ground in Europe because of all the work done by Protestant reformers. Many people were hearing the truth from the Bible as they never had before. In the 1380s, Wycliffe had pioneered the way in England by translating the Bible from Latin, a dead language that only the priests, monks, and bishops of the Church of Rome could read.
